The Southwest SELPA and its member districts are required to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, including those attending private schools, youth incarcerated in adult or residential/detention facilities, homeless and migrant children, and wards of the state. This process, known as Child Find, ensures that all children with disabilities are identified and evaluated.
Parents or guardians who are concerned about their child's development or believe their child may need special education services due to physical, emotional, learning, or speech difficulties are encouraged to contact their local school district or the SELPA office. Federal and state laws require schools to provide a free, appropriate education to children with disabilities. Children from birth through age 21 may qualify for special education programs in public schools.
